Sixteen-year-old Jennifer Krueger of Little Canada, MN began her formative years much like other kids. She attended St. John the Evangelist grade school and was very active in Girl Scouts, Odyssey of the Mind, piano, basketball, softball and figure skating. But it was the last week of fifth grade at only 11 years of age when her life changed forever. Jennifer had been experiencing some leg pain that year but thought it was due to a sports injury. She was eventually to learn she had bone cancer, and that she would have to endure chemotherapy, major reconstructive surgery on her right leg and painful rehabilitative physical therapy to learn to walk again.
Every woman is born with an innate dignity. Every girl and every woman should be nurtured, encouraged and supported as she works to develop her potential. But many women never have the chance to develop their potential because their lives are filled with more immediate concerns, such as their very survival and the survival of their children in the face of domestic abuse. Loretta Frederick, of Winona, MN, has dedicated her life and her career to helping battered women escape the cycle of abuse, freeing them to pursue their dreams.
Growing up a farm kid in Iowa, Dorothy McIntyre learned that people survived by their skills, commitment and perseverance to a task, whether it was driving tractors or horses on farm implements, de-tassling mile-long rows of corn or resolving the challenges of adolescence. Her gender did not protect her. She learned early on that she needed to know the rules of the game before wading into conflict. This lesson guided Dorothy throughout her career.
