The list of achievements of 17-year-old Alison Smith, of Nevis, MN, reads more like that of an accomplished person who has lived an already full life. Alison's contributions to her community, school and church, and her unique ability to inspire others, have rewarded her with numerous awards from others, including the U.S. Congress.
Since sustaining a spinal cord injury at the age of 14, Susan Hagel has worked tirelessly as an advocate for the right of the disabled to live a barrier-free life. Through her chosen profession as a therapeutic recreation specialist for Allina Health System's Sister Kenny Institute, and her involvement in athletic competition, she has taken a leadership role to forge the way for women with disabilities to achieve equal opportunities. Susan is a mentor, a role model and an advocate for the rights of the physically challenged.
Mary Hartmann was four years old in 1952, living with her mother, father and three young sisters. One day their mother went to church leaving Mary with her sisters and their father. Her father, a World War II veteran diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, set the house on fire, locked the door and walked off. With no insurance and no way to rebuild, Mary and her family were suddenly homeless. Mary's grandparents took them all in, along with their two other children who had not yet left home.
Founded in 1929 on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, YMCA Camp Widjiwagan is a leader in teaching the values of respect and leadership to youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Widji's programs introduce teens to the powerful experience of living and traveling in the wilderness, and to environmental education and team building.
